What I do
How I can help
Whether you're a student, a company, or a research group, I work with you across three areas — grounded in hands-on materials and battery engineering.
🎓
Mentoring
Helping students and early-career researchers do their best work and grow with confidence.
  • Studying in Germany — for metallurgy & materials students
  • Guidance for Master's & PhD students
  • Research methodology support
  • Thesis review
  • Career advice
🏭
Industry Consulting
Practical, vendor-neutral technical support to move products and processes forward.
  • Material selection
  • Root cause analysis
  • Technical documentation
  • Process improvement
🔬
Research Collaboration
Partnering with academic and industrial groups from first idea to published result.
  • Proposal development
  • Experimental design
  • Joint publications
  • Innovation partnerships
The person behind the expertise
A quick tour of where I've been, what I work on, and why I love this field — because the best collaborations start with knowing who you're working with.
Hi, I'm Saurabh 👋
I'm a materials engineer with 8+ years across research and industry — from synthesising nanomaterials at TU Darmstadt to developing lithium-ion battery safety components at Soteria Europe, where I built a materials lab in Germany for separators and current collectors.
Based in Jülich, I now work independently — mentoring students, advising companies, and collaborating with research groups. I hold German Permanent Residence and work with people worldwide.

🎓
Education
M.Tech, Metallurgical & Materials Engineering — IIT Madras (GPA 9.29/10, DAAD exchange at TU Darmstadt). B.Tech — VNIT Nagpur.
🏭
Industry experience
Materials Engineer at Soteria Europe (Li-ion battery safety — separators, current collectors, PCB busbars) and Materials Scientist at TU Darmstadt (nanomaterials, thin films, gas adsorption).
🔬
Research interests
Battery safety, next-generation separators & current collectors, thin-film technologies, and nanomaterials for energy & carbon capture. Published in ACS Appl. Mater. Interfaces.
🎯
Areas of specialization
Separator fabrication, metallized polymer current collectors (PVD & electroplating), CVD/PVD nanomaterial synthesis, and materials characterisation (XRD, SEM, XPS, FTIR, AFM, BET, Raman).
Why I mentor & collaborate

“I supervised my first Master's students years ago and never stopped enjoying it — there's nothing like watching an idea finally click for someone. Having come to Germany as a student myself, I especially love helping metallurgy and materials students find their own path here. And I take on consulting and collaborations for the same reason: the best materials work happens when curious people solve hard problems together.”

Experience
Career highlights
A track record across research, development, and manufacturing in the battery and materials space.
NOV 2025 — PRESENT
Engineering Consultant (Self-Employed)
Saurabh Materials · Jülich, Germany · Remote
Supporting clients with technical guidance on battery and functional materials — characterisation strategy, data interpretation, clear documentation and reports, and remote collaboration to meet project milestones. Flexible, project-based engagements aligned to client objectives.
SEP 2022 — OCT 2025
Materials Engineer
Soteria Europe GmbH · Düren, Germany
Led development of a compact, safer PCB-based busbar for battery packs. Established a materials development and testing lab in Germany for separators and current collectors. Developed cost-effective metallized polymer current collectors via PVD and electroplating, and co-led a study on impurity-scavenging cellulose separators for extended Li-ion cycle life.
JUN 2017 — JUN 2020
Materials Scientist
TU Darmstadt · Darmstadt, Germany
Synthesized carbon nanotubes via CVD and studied gas adsorption for carbon capture, including a custom gas-adsorption chamber for electric-field-driven uptake. Supervised two Master's research projects in nanomaterials and surface science.
