What I do
Consulting services
Hands-on technical support for battery and materials teams — engagements scale from a focused review to ongoing, project-based R&D advisory.
🔋
Battery Safety Engineering
Improving lithium-ion cell and pack safety through current collector, separator, and busbar design — drawing on hands-on development of next-generation safety components.
⚗️
Separator Development
Fabrication and optimisation of separators (incl. cellulose, Rapid Köthen sheet former) for strength, reduced thickness, and thermal stability with polymer coatings.
🪙
Current Collectors & Thin Films
Cost-effective metallized polymer current collectors via PVD and electroplating, plus thin-film deposition strategy and process guidance.
🔬
Materials Characterisation
Designing characterisation strategies and interpreting data across XRD, SEM, XPS, FTIR, AFM, BET, Raman, UV-Vis, and mechanical (tensile/hardness) testing.
🧪
Nanomaterials & CVD/PVD Synthesis
Synthesis of nanomaterials (CNTs, oxides, graphene) via CVD and PVD (e-beam, boat evaporation) for energy, capture, and functional-material applications.
📑
R&D Advisory & Documentation
Vendor-neutral technical guidance, clear reports and technical summaries for stakeholders, and remote collaboration to keep projects on milestone.
About
A materials engineer focused on battery safety
I work at the intersection of materials science and battery engineering — turning safer chemistries and components into things that hold up in the real world.
Hi, I'm Saurabh 👋
I'm a materials engineer with 8+ years across materials development, thin-film technologies, and lithium-ion battery safety. Most recently at Soteria Europe I led development of a compact PCB-based busbar for battery packs (patent filed) and built a materials lab in Germany for separators and current collectors.
Based in Jülich, I now work independently — providing expert R&D advisory to clients remotely, from materials characterisation strategy to clear technical documentation. I hold German Permanent Residence and work with teams worldwide.
A track record across research, development, and manufacturing in the battery and materials space.
NOV 2025 — PRESENT
Engineering Consultant (Self-Employed)
Saurabh Materials · Jülich, Germany · Remote
Supporting clients with technical guidance on battery and functional materials — characterisation strategy, data interpretation, clear documentation and reports, and remote collaboration to meet project milestones. Flexible, project-based engagements aligned to client objectives.
SEP 2022 — OCT 2025
Materials Engineer
Soteria Europe GmbH · Düren, Germany
Led development of a compact, safer PCB-based busbar for battery packs (patent filed). Established a materials development and testing lab in Germany for separators and current collectors. Developed cost-effective metallized polymer current collectors via PVD and electroplating, and co-led a study on impurity-scavenging cellulose separators for extended Li-ion cycle life.
JUN 2017 — JUN 2020
Materials Scientist
TU Darmstadt · Darmstadt, Germany
Synthesized carbon nanotubes via CVD and studied gas adsorption for carbon capture, including a custom gas-adsorption chamber for electric-field-driven uptake. Supervised two Master's research projects in nanomaterials and surface science.
